Boat Fishing on Rotorua's World-Class Lakes
With over a decade of operating fishing charters on the Rotorua lakes, I offer trips for anglers of all experience levels. Most charters take place on Lakes Rotorua, Rotoiti and Tarawera, with other lakes fished at different times of the year. Using proven techniques, we target trout throughout the seasons to make the most of the fishing opportunities available. Maximum three anglers.
The Quintrex 500 Hornet Trophy provides a stable and versatile fishing platform, ideally suited to fishing the Rotorua lakes.
At 5.2 metres (17 ft) and powered by a Mercury 90hp outboard, it offers plenty of space while remaining easy to manoeuvre. A Minn Kota electric motor allows precise boat positioning, while Lowrance electronics assist with navigation and fish finding.
The boat is fully surveyed and commercially endorsed through Maritime New Zealand.
Jigging
Jigging is an effective method for targeting rainbow trout holding at depth and can provide some of the most productive fishing of the year. The peak jigging season is during the summer months, when the thermocline forms and trout concentrate at depth.
Harling
Harling is a productive way to cover larger areas of water and target actively feeding trout. Spring is a particularly productive time for harling, when trout are actively feeding on smelt near the surface. It can also be an effective technique throughout the winter months.
Spin Fishing & Soft Plastics
Spin fishing with soft plastics is an effective technique for targeting trout throughout the year. It can be used to sight fish to individual trout in clear, shallow water, and is also an effective option on land-based fishing trips around the Rotorua lakes.
What's included?
Professional guiding and quality fishing equipment are provided if required. Full-day charters include lunch and refreshments. Guests are also welcome to bring their own fishing equipment.
What should I bring?
Weather-appropriate clothing, a waterproof rain jacket, hat and polarised sunglasses are recommended. Lifejackets and all required safety equipment are provided aboard the boat.
Do I need fishing experience?
No previous fishing experience is required. Boat fishing is suitable for complete beginners through to experienced anglers, with techniques and fishing locations tailored accordingly.
Do I need a fishing licence?
A Fish & Game New Zealand Eastern Region fishing licence is required for fishing the Rotorua lakes.
When is the best time for boat fishing?
Excellent boat fishing is available throughout the year on the Rotorua lakes. Fishing locations and techniques change with the seasons, allowing us to target trout according to their movements and feeding patterns.
